FLAMPOULE

Project in collaboration with Samuel Aden

This orchestra is a study on synesthesia and the confusion of senses.

The principle is to create a range of tools which materialises sound in real time through interaction between light and colours. This allows the player to be aware of the sound material he produces. We are dealing with a translation of the language of sound into that of light and colours. The goal of this project is twofold: firstly, to open up the world of deaf people to a metaphor of musical language, and secondly, to explore human behaviour when faced to this kind of hybrid instruments.

The flampoule is a wind instrument which hybridizes light and sound for the benefit of the deaf and hard of hearing. The principle is to create a tool which materialises sound in real time through interaction between light and colour. This allows the player to be aware of the sound material he produces. We are dealing with a translation of the language of sound lnto that of light and colours.

Material: blow glasses, electronic components, conductive ink, plexiglas, wood.

The Flampoule is the first instrument of a planned orchestra of  hybrid instruments. The purpose is to open the world of the deaf to a metaphor of musical language.

In the continuity of this project, we have set up different instrument in the same purpose, like the vibrapoule.

This instrument is part of the light percussion family, the vibrapoule consists of eleven identical aluminium plates that vibrate when the player hit them. The light intensity is linked to the quality of vibration and the power of the hit. The real time controller offers the possibility to tune the colour of each plate independently. The blow glass parts are used as colors amplifiers. In this case, a mirror place in the back of the vibraphone give a visuel feedback to when you play it.

Material: blow glasses, electronic components, aluminium, mirror, wood.
